If you have travelled a long way to be here, it would be a shame if your experience of Alenquer were limited to the journey between the hotel, the church, and the dance floor.
Alenquer has been part of our story for many years. It is where we grew up, where we went to school, and where many of the memories that brought us to this day were made. For that reason, we would like to share a few suggestions to help you discover a little more of the town and the surrounding region.
Alenquer, the Christmas Crib Town
During the Christmas season, Alenquer transforms itself into Portugal’s Christmas Crib Town. The hillsides are filled with life-sized Nativity figures, exhibitions and Christmas markets appear throughout the town, and the whole area takes on a truly special atmosphere.
It is well worth strolling through the streets in the late afternoon, making your way up the hillside, and discovering how the Nativity scenes blend seamlessly into the town’s landscape and architecture. Even for those who do not have a particular connection to this tradition, it is a uniquely local experience and one of the most iconic images of Alenquer.
Serra de Montejunto
Just a few minutes from the town lies the Serra de Montejunto, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the region. For those who enjoy hiking, nature, or simply taking in spectacular views, we highly recommend a visit.
On a clear day, it is possible to admire a vast stretch of the West region and understand why this mountain range is often known as the region’s natural balcony.
Vineyards, Country Estates and Rural Landscapes
Alenquer is also a land of wine. The roads surrounding the town wind through vineyards, country estates and small villages, creating some of the most characteristic landscapes of this part of Portugal.
Even without a particular destination in mind, it is well worth exploring the region's country roads and taking in the scenery that forms part of everyday life for those who live here.
Getting Lost in Alenquer
Sometimes, the best way to discover a place is simply to wander without rushing.
Stroll through the narrow streets of the historic centre, explore the small squares, hidden viewpoints, churches, and corners that reveal themselves around every bend of the hillside. Make your way up towards the ruins of the castle walls and take in the views over the valley and the rooftops of the town below.
Alenquer is not a place to rush from one monument to the next. It is a place to be explored slowly, observed carefully and enjoyed fully.
